Our profile

The Women's and Children's Hospital (WCH) provides state of the art health care for women and children in Adelaide and South Australia. We are a world leader in many areas of endeavour.

Each year, more than 30,000 people are admitted and around 4000 babies are born at the Hospital.  In addition around 250,000 people come to the Hospital as outpatients.

The Hospital has a 103 bed Obstetric Unit, a 49 bed Intensive/Special Care Nursery and a 153 bed Child and Adolescent Unit, totalling 305 beds in all.

We are constantly redeveloping and improving our facilities.

Research

Research is a crucial investment in future health and the hundreds of research projects under way aim to prevent illness and disease and improve treatment options. The WCH is undertaking groundbreaking research in many fields including cytogenetics, immunology and lysosomal storage disorders.

Education

The education of health professionals provides an essential foundation for the future of women's and children's health.  As one of the state's major teaching hospitals, the WCH works with all three South Australian universities in the training of hundreds of health professionals each year. The WCH also attracts many overseas health professionals seeking to upgrade their skills and qualifications.

Servicing remote areas

WCH is a pioneer in the application of virtual technology, enabling people in remote and rural areas to access services through the establishment of the SA Virtual Health Network. The WCH also has a full emergency and remote areas retrieval role and provides services to rural South Australia and parts of the Northern Territory, Queensland and NSW.

The WCH is playing a leading role in improving the health of women and children in South Australia, and throughout the world.
