Health Promotion

The WCH is a Health Promoting Health Service

The World Health Organisation defines health promotion as the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve their health.

Since 1993 the WCH has recognised health promotion as part of its role. The WCH has sought to integrate health promotion into the hospital 'organisation' and through its partnerships with community agencies.

Since 1999, the WCH has strengthened its focus on the health of the broader community, acknowledging its statewide responsibility and contribution to improving the health of women, children and young people.

In 2000 the WCH Executive and Board formalised their commitment to health promotion as a core part of the Hospital's business with the inclusion of 'Community health promotion and wellbeing' in the WCH Strategic Plan.

The Centre for Health Promotion was established in October 2001 to enhance the Hospital's health promotion efforts. The Centre develops and delivers a wide range of health promotion programs, health brochures and resources.

Primary Health Care

With the combining of the Women's and Children's Hospital and Child and Youth Health's community services under the Children, Youth and Women's Health Service, comes a strong foundation of primary health care services. These will be strengthened and expanded to improve the health of our populations. This will include a stronger focus on illness prevention, health promotion and early intervention programs.
