Volunteering within the WCH

Volunteer Service

The value of WCH volunteers extends beyond the many hours they give to the Hospital.  Our volunteers serve as important links to the community. Through their work they understand the vision and values of the Hospital and take what they learn back to their community. They serve as ambassadors on issues that affect the health and well being of the women and children of South Australia.

WCH volunteers have the satisfaction of making a difference and meet interesting people.

Approximately 170 regular volunteers support the work of the Hospital in many wards and departments, including:

Child contact

  • assisting play therapists in the children’s wards
  • supporting staff with child minding in WCH Creche

Women's and Babies Division

  • providing an escort service for patients and other tasks in Women’s Admissions
  • visiting new mothers with information about our services
  • greeting families and visitors in neonatal and special care nurseries
  • facilitating craft projects for antenatal patients

General support

  • Supporting parents and patients in Rogerson Theatre holding bay
  • Providing respite support for parents of long term patients
  • Clerical assistance in a range of departments and units

The Volunteer Service operates mainly between the hours of 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. There are very limited placements at weekends.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and must be in good health. We ask that volunteers make a commitment of approximately four hours each week, (preferably on the same day) and are prepared to give a significant period of continuous service.
