Dr. Sharon Byers,
Pathophysiology,
Lysosomal Diseases Research Unit

Dr Sharon Byers received her Ph.D. from the Monash University, Melbourne in 1983. She spent 6 years in the USA, initially as a post-doc at Rush Presbyterian St Lukes Medical Center, Chicago and then as an Assistant Research Professor at the West Virginia Medical Center before returning to Adelaide.

Sharon heads the Pathophysiology section of the Lysosomal Diseases Research Unit, which in addition consists of a research Officer (Dr E.W. Johnstone), 4 research assistants and 3 postgraduate students.

The main area of research is directed towards an understanding of the mechanisms of bone growth in children, notably the interactions between extracellular matrix and cytokines. In addition to an investigation of normal growth, a genetic disorder affecting extracellular matrix degradation (mucopolysaccharidoses) is under examination. On a more clinical level, research projects to target therapy regimens to the sites of pathology in the mucopolysaccharidoses are underway. Specific projects include the evaluation of enzyme replacement therapy on skeletal and CNS pathology and the development of improved diagnostic assays for the mucopolysaccharidoses. Through collaboration with Dr N.L. Fazzalari (IMVS, Adelaide) and Dr R.W. Byard (Histopathology, WCH) an investigation into the role of primary growth abnormality in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is ongoing.

Pathophysiology research is funded by grants from the NH&MRC program grant on Lysosomal Storage Disorders, the Women's and Children's Hospital Foundation, the Bone Growth Foundation, the Adelaide and Joint Research foundation and the SIDS Research foundation
