In October 2003, the WCH's new Endocrine and Diabetes Centre opened, made possible thanks to the generosity of the McGuinness McDermott Foundation. The Centre brings together all aspects of endocrine and diabetes treatment, including the co-location of research and services staff, and provides a supportive environment for consumers to learn to deal with their health issues. The department provides a full range of endocrine/diabetes services for children from birth to 18 years of age.
Endocrine services include management of growth, thyroid, pituitary, adrenal, pubertal and bone disorders.
Diabetes services include initial stabilisation, child, adolescent and parent education at diagnosis and follow-up through the diabetes outpatient clinics.
Referrals from a health professional (e.g. General Practitioner or Paediatrician) is required for outpatient appointments. Medical practitioners are requested to consult the
Endocrinology and Diabetes Referral Guidelines (273kb). All referrals should be faxed to the Administration Hub on 8161 6246.
Appointments for
outpatient clinics
can be made through the Outpatient Department on (08) 8161 7399. Appointments
to see a consultant as a private patient can be made by calling (08) 8161 6402.

The department houses the NHMRC JDRF Centre of Research Excellence in type 1 diabetes and is part of national and international research networks for the prevention of type 1 diabetes and its complications in children and adolescents, trials of new insulin pump and glucose monitoring technologies, and the treatment of Polycystic ovary disease.
