Research Grants Committee

The Research Grants Committee (RGC) serves the aims and objectives of the Women's and Children's Health Network (WCHN) and the WCH Foundation. It reports to the Women's and Children's Hospital Foundation Board of Directors.

The RGC is convened to review applications for WCH Foundation Grants and to recommend grant applications for funding to the WCH Foundation Directors.

The Research Grants Committee’s Terms of Reference are to:

  1. Support research in respect to women’s, young people’s, children’s, prenatal and neonatal health, in accordance with the primary purpose of the Women's and Children's Hospital Network (WCHN) and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital Foundation.
  2. Promote, fund and foster research in the areas of women’s, children’s and young people’s health so that new knowledge can be gained and translated into practice.
  3. Provide an assessment procedure for applications for research grant funding submitted by staff of WCHN, Women’s  and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI), SA Pathology (WCH Campus) and CYWHS Core University Departments. The process adopted must be clear, readily understood and be seen to be fair and at the same time fulfil the expectations of high standards of accountability.
  4. Fund research based on the fundamental principles of excellence of the research grant application, the study design, track record or the applicants, and potential benefit of the research study program to the overall health of women, young people and children.
  5. Encourage research by “new researchers” to ensure the longevity and quality of research undertaken into the health of women, young people and children.

Members of the Research Grants Committee are external to WCHN. The RGC comprises an independent Chair with a high level of expertise in research and in research policy formation and up to 10 further members with expertise across a wide range of health professions and research. The Chair has the authority to appoint extra members on an 'as needs' basis to provide expertise in areas identified by the Chair.

Administrative support is provided to this committee by the Research Secretariat.
