The Cooper Medical Research Foundation

The Rebecca L. Cooper Medical Research Foundation is a private, self funded medical research body whose resolve is the promotion and encouragement of medical research into all fields of the medical sciences, throughout Australia. The Foundation meets its goals by annually giving research grants within an ever widening group of research categories that it decides to support.

The Foundation has a personal approach towards the granting of research funds and this is appreciated by their recipients, often expressed at their Grants Dinner held in late March each year.

Arthritis Australia Ken Muirden Overseas Training Fellowship

Grant amount: $100,000 (for a period of 12 months)

This grant is designed to give a rheumatologist who is about to or has completed advanced training in Rheumatology within the last two years an opportunity to undertake further clinical or research training overseas in an approved institution in any country. The purpose of the Foundation is to promote health, educational or social research that encourages and advances investigation into the cause, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of any condition that may affect the general health, education or welfare of children.

Applicants are asked to note:

1. Applications are sought from the fields of Medicine, Education, Dentistry, Nursing, Social Sciences, Environment, Mental Health and Allied Health.
2. Applications will be received in three categories – basic science, clinical studies or community-based studies. Special consideration will be given to ‘early career applicants’, applying for the first time as Chief Investigator.
3. Grants are allocated solely to applicants for research completed in South Australia or the Northern Territory.
4. The Foundation generally supports grants up to $75,000 per annum.
5. Applications may be supported for a maximum of two years.

Howard Florey Emeritus Fellowship

The aim of the Program Grants scheme is to provide support for teams of high calibre researchers to pursue broad based, multi-disciplinary and collaborative research activities. Teams will be expected to contribute to new knowledge at a leading international level in important areas of health and medical research. The scheme is available for all research approaches relevant to better health (ie biomedical, clinical, public health or health services research) and is typically for 5 years.

Pfizer Australia

Pfizer Australia Paediatric Endocrine Care Research Grants

Pfizer Australia will allocate AUD$150,000 per annum to this initiative as part of its continued commitment to paediatric endocrinology research.

APEC Research Grants are designed to encourage young researchers to enter or continue in the field of Paediatric Endocrinology. Therefore, applicants must be under 40 years of age at the time of applying and a trainee in Paediatric Endocrinology in Australasia or within 5 years of conferring of FRACP or within 5 years of accreditation of Paediatric Endocrinology training from the Endocrinology SAC (Royal Australian College of Physicians). Applications will not be accepted from senior researchers.

Individual grants will be available up to AUD$55,000 (including GST). Each grant is for a period of 12 months.

Applications are welcome from medical graduates who are currently residing, working, and conducting research within Australasia. Successful applicants would be expected to conduct their research within Paediatric Endocrinology Units within Australasia.

Pfizer Australia Cancer Research Grants

Pfizer Australia will allocate up to AUD$300,000 per annum to this initiative as part of our continued commitment to cancer research.

This research grants program is open to medical graduates who are early in their research career, having commenced research, (or have returned to research after an appropriate break) within the last 5 years (e.g. the applicant has initiated or has been awarded a PhD/MD within the last 5 years). Individual grants will be available up to AUD$55,000 (including GST). Each grant is for a period of 12 months.

The principal applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia. Grant recipients must conduct the majority of the research within Australia.

Pfizer Australia Neuroscience Research Grants

Pfizer Australia will allocate up to AUD$300,000 per annum to this initiative as part of their continued commitment to neuroscience research.

The research grants program is open to medical graduates who are early in their research career, having commenced research (or have returned to research after an appropriate break) within the last 5 years. Therefore applications are open to medical graduates who have obtained, or are in the process of obtaining specialist qualifications/doctorate and/or are currently in advanced training. Individual grants will be available up to AUD$44,000 (including GST). Each grant is for a period of 12 months.

The principal applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia. Grant recipients must conduct the majority of the research within Australia.

Research funding is awarded for clinical research across the fields of (but not necessarily confined to) cardiovascular disease, stroke or lipid disorders.

beyondblue National Priority Driven Research Program

In 2011, beyondblue is proud to offer research funding through a new grant funding scheme, the beyondblue National Priority Driven Research Program. Funding will be available to support clinical and applied research that addresses evidence gaps related to the following priority areas:

  • Depression and anxiety in adolescents and young adults
  • Depression and anxiety in older people
  • Depression and anxiety in the perinatal period

As a result of our partnership with the Movember Foundation, further grants will be made available for projects that specifically address depression and anxiety amongst young men; older men; and fathers and expectant fathers.

The Mason Foundation

ANZ Trustees and the National Medical Advisory Panel is calling for expressions of interest (EOI) from researchers interested in answering significant questions around Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

Diabetes Australia Research Trust 2013 Grant Round  

     The Directors of the Diabetes Australia Research Trust (DART) are pleased to offer the following grants for commencement in 2013 with announcements to be made on or around World Diabetes Day, 14 November 2012:

• The Viertel Postdoctoral Fellowship in Diabetes of $300,000

• The Type 2 Diabetes Underworks Millennium Award of up to $150,000

• The Type 1 Diabetes Millennium Award of up to $150,000

• A number of one year DART General Research Grants up to $60,000

• Three one year DART Behavioural Research Grants up to $60,000

Beat Cancer Project Blue Sky Cancer Research

Applications are now open

The new Beat Cancer Project Blue Sky Cancer Research Funding scheme aims to provide financial support for research projects in biomedical science and in applied population health, health sciences and clinical fields, which will be allocated on a competitive basis. The scheme will support cancer research projects that show significant potential for future funding by granting bodies. This funding will be directed towards projects that could make a major difference to cancer prevention, treatment and knowledge. To increase cancer research funding in SA matched funding is also required.

The Beat Cancer Project Blue Sky Cancer Research Funding Scheme is particularly aimed at early pathways of cancer research development and the primary objectives are to:

  • -          Fund research activities that show significant potential for future funding by granting bodies.
  • -          Fill a void unmet by existing funding schemes for supporting establishment of research projects with a direct and focused cancer prevention and control component.
  • -          Support research projects that demonstrate originality in conception and demonstrate potential to uncover new knowledge and or apply existing knowledge to cancer prevention and control in SA.
  • -          Translate research results to inform complementary research activity, health policy and development.
  • -          Place an equivalent emphasis on merit-based funding of 1) basic biomedical research; and 2) applied clinical, health services and population health research.
  • -          Foster collaboration - further catalyse the drawing together of academic staff from across disciplines, including where relevant, policy makers and including public health professionals, to engage in research addressing cancer prevention and control.
  • -          Increase cancer research funding in SA.

The Prime Minister's Prizes for Science - Nominations for 2011 now open

Closing date: 13 May 2011, AEST 5.00 pm

The Australian Government awards five prizes annually for outstanding scientific achievements and excellence in science teaching.  These awards are the most prestigious and significant of their kind in Australia.  Each award comprises a solid embossed gold/silver engraved medallion, with matching lapel pins, and tax-exempt cash components totalling A$500,000.

  • The Prime Minister's Prize for Science;
  • The Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year;
  • The Science Minister's Prize for Life Scientist of the Year;
  • The Prime Minister's Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Primary Schools; and
  • The Prime Minister's Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools.

Nominations are now invited for these awards, which are offered to Australian citizens or those who hold permanent residence status in Australia.  Nominations must be made by nominators who are personally knowledgeable of the nominated achievements and who can offer expert opinions on its worth. Self nominations will not be considered.

Early Career Research Grants

 

The Asthma Foundation of South Australia (AFSA) would like to offer an early career research grant to support research into asthma. The grant, up to $25,000 will be awarded to an individual and institution with access to appropriate research facilities under the supervision of a responsible investigator.  The grant may cover salary for research, technical, or other assistance as well as the cost of minor equipment, materials and other necessary items.

The Foundation is keen to encourage new researchers in commencing their research careers. The grant will be considered and assessed upon merit.
