Presence of Parents at Induction of Anaesthesia.
The following are guidelines for use by paediatric anaesthetists at the WCH. As with all guidelines they may be varied at the discretion of the attending anaesthetist if in his or her professional opinion a variation is warranted.
1. Only an anaesthetist may authorise a parent to accompany a child for induction of anaesthesia. 2. The authorisation is indicated by ticking the designated box on the Anaesthetic Record sheet. 3. One parent, guardian, or care giver only will be permitted to be present at induction. 4. The anticipated sequence of events must be clearly explained to the parent prior to induction together with what is expected of them. 5. A designated person other than the anaesthetic nurse must be available to escort the parent back to the Holding Bay. 6. Parents are NEVER permitted to remain after the induction or during a procedure. 7. Parents are not permitted to be present for the induction of babies under 6 months old, for rapid sequence inductions or other situations where the anaesthetist deems their presence would not be helpful. 8. Parental presence is designed to help the child rather than the parent.
