Guidelines for Perioperative Fluid Management

FASTING:

1. Patients should fast for six hours from food or milk drinks (this includes sweets and gum).

2. Cordial or water may be given until two hours before the scheduled time of the operation.

3. Babies less than 6 months of age should fast for four (4) hours from breast milk or formula. Cordial or water may be given until two (2) hours before the scheduled time of operation.

FEEDING:

As per "Guidelines for Pre-Anaesthetic Feeding and Fasting" (29 March 1995).

FLUIDS:

1. No i.v. fluids pre-op

Use Hartmann's solution, no sugar for intra-operative use

2. I.V. fluids running pre-op

Continue pre-op maintenance fluids

Use Hartmann's solution for intra-operative replacement

3. Colloid/blood transfusion as indicated

4. Be aware of patients with specific fluid requirements (eg: neonates, diabetes, mitochondrial myopathy, renal failure)
