Diagnostic Microbiology Unit

The Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Department provides a comprehensive Microbiology and Serology diagnostic service to the WCH. This is particularly tailored to the needs of pregnant/post partum women, neonates, children and adolescents.

Specialised services include:

  • bordetella pertussis culture and polymerase chain reaction
  • the South Australian meningococcal reference laboratory
  • pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenzae
  • a specialised diagnostic service for high - risk obstetrics.

Facilities for urine specimen collection are available.

How to access the service

Ring Paediatric Outpatients (08) 8161 7399 or (08) 8161 6644 to make an appointment for the Infectious Diseases Clinic.

Phone advice can be provided to medical and allied health professionals, as well as the general public. We also welcome consultations in paediatric and obstetric infection at other institutions.

Hours of Service

Monday to Friday 8am - 6pm
Saturday 8am - 4pm
Sunday 8am - 12 noon

Research Activity

Bordetella pertussis strain characterisation infections in pre-term birth reference services include the SA section of the National Neisseria (meningococcal) Network.
