Post Mortem Materials and Products of Conception

Where karyotyping has been requested preferred samples are those that are from both the placental tissue (villi and amnion) and fetus (gonad, pericardium and skin).

Fresh tissue is suitable for cytogenetic analysis and needs to be collected aseptically and transported in sterile saline. Results from optimal tissue can be achieved within 21 days.

Any sample collected in formalin or other fixative contains no living cells and is therefore unsuitable for cytogenetic analysis.

If samples cannot be sent immediately to the laboratory they may be safely stored at 5 ° C prior to transportation. Under no circumstances should the specimen be frozen as this will result in cell death.
