Presymptomatic testing

Presymptomatic testing

The Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA) has produced the HGSA Guidelines for DNA Predictive Testing. In accordance with the HGSA Guidelines:

  • Presymptomatic (predictive) testing is offered for Myotonic dystrophy (DM) and Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA).
  • All presymptomatic test requests must be accompanied with a signed consent form. Presymptomatic testing cannot proceed without this consent form.
  • On receipt of the signed consent laboratory staff can proceed with the knowledge that appropriate counselling has been provided.
  • Any sample received for late onset disorders eg DM and SCA MUST have CLINICAL indication for testing. In cases where NO clinical information is provided, clarification will be sought to ascertain that it is not a predictive test, causing a delay in test results.
  • This is a Class B test and is subject to testing under NPACC guidelines (2000).
