The Toxicology / Special Biochemistry Laboratory provides diagnostic services to South Australia and the wider Australian community in a range of specialist areas.

A diverse range of services and tests are available including:

Sweat analyses for the diagnosis of children with Cystic Fibrosis
Measurement of blood lead levels in children – this specialised service is provided to centres around Australia
The laboratory also acts as a specialist reference laboratory for the diagnosis of porphyrin disorders
Vitamin and trace element analyses provide support to children and adults with nutritional problems
Specialised drug quantitations for benzodiazepines, sulthiame and itraconazole, voriconazole and posaconazole.
Paediatric toxicology screening
Pyruvate, ketone and free fatty acid measurement assist in the diagnosis of metabolic diseases.
Measurement of haemoglobin A1c to support diabetic patients.
Specialised obstetric support services include bile acid measurement to assess cholestasis and amniotic fluid optical scanning for bilirubin.
Immunoassays for 17-hydroxyprogesterone, growth hormone and beta 2 microglobulin.
