Haematology Laboratory

The Haematology Laboratory provides a laboratory service for the diagnosis and management of haematological abnormalities.

Some of the routine haematology tests are performed by the Core Laboratory, these include complete blood pictures, reticulocyte counts and malaria screens.

Specialist services performed by the Laboratory include:

• Routine and specialised coagulation tests, eg factor assays and thrombophilia screen.
• Bone marrow assessment and reporting
• Immunophenotyping of leukaemia and lymphoma
• Platelet function tests and platelet antibody testing
• Reticulated platelets for the determination of impaired platelet production/increased platelet turnover
• Quantitative anti-D and Kleihauer test by slide and flow cytometry
• Special assays eg red cell G6PD
• Bone marrow and apheresis stem cell harvesting, processing and storage service
• Full diagnostic service for transfusion
• Full range of blood product dispensing

How to access the service

Submit an appropriate sample with completed pathology request form to Pathology Reception, 4th floor, Clarence Rieger Building.

The clinical service can be accessed through the Haematology/Oncology Department Secretary during normal business hours ph (08) 8161 7327 or via the hospital switchboard after hours ph (08) 8161 7000 and ask for the on-call Haematologist.

Transfusion Section  24 hours 7 days
