Department of Histopathology

Histopathology provides a full diagnostic service for routine histopathological examination as well as specialised services including:

• paediatric tumour pathology
• placental pathology
• paediatric gastrointestinal biopsy including Hirschsprung's disease
• immunohistochemistry
• immunofluorescence
• electron microscopy
• fine needle aspiration
• non-cervical cytology
• urgent frozen section diagnosis.

These services require direct consultation as specialised collection procedures are required.  Advanced notification of should be booked with the department on 8161 7333.

• Perinatal and paediatric autopsy.

We also perform all autopsies from the WCH, provide a State wide Perinatal Autopsy Service  and provide a paediatric autopsy service on request from other SA hospitals and practitioners.  Please follow the link above.

Specimens and completed pathology request forms should be forwarded to the Pathology Collection Service, with the exception of urgent and unfixed specimens which should be delivered directly to the Histopathology Department.

Specimens may be sent to the WCH via the State Pathology Courier Service phone (08) 8222 3530.  Specimens should be clearly marked "To the WCH".

General Business: 830am - 530pm Monday to Friday.

There is a 24 hour on call service for urgent specimens. Contact the Duty Pathologist via the hospital switchboard ph (08) 8161 7000.
