Adolescent Sexual Abuse Prevention Program

Adolescent Sexual Abuse Prevention Program

The Adolescent Sexual Assault Prevention Program is also known as Mary Street.

Mary Street is a prevention program, which promotes safety in families and communities by helping young people to stop sexual abuse and sexual harassment of others.

Mary Street provides counseling and help for adolescents and their families or care givers to assist young people to:

  • take responsibility to stop sexual abuse and sexual harassment
  • make restitution to help heal the harm caused by sexual abuse and sexual harassment
  • respect others and develop appropriate relationships
  • build self respect and confidence
  • make sexuality respectful and positive

Most young people seen at Mary Street have their offences investigated by police or other authorities and may have faced police charges with attendance at Family Conference or Youth Court. We do not offer an alternative to legal intervention but work cooperatively with police, courts, and welfare agencies to achieve an outcome:

  • which puts priority on the safety and wellbeing of younger children and those at risk
  • which encourages the young person to take responsibility for their actions
  • which is fair for all people concerned
  • which is respectful for the younger person

Mary Street also provides:

  • assessment for Youth Court
  • assessment to assist statutory organisations such as Children Youth and Family Services (CYFS) to plan for safe family contact and family reconciliation
  • training and consultation for health, welfare, justice and education workers
  • consultation regarding policy development concerning prevention of sexual abuse and sexual harassment in organisations which deal with young people
