Boylan Ward

Boylan Ward is the only designated psychiatric inpatient facility for children and adolescents in South Australia and provides specialised care and support for children and adolescents with severe mental health problems who

  • are experiencing the early stages of a psychotic illness
  • are suffering severe mental disorder (including depression) often with a suicidal component
  • have complex and coexisting disorders requiring multiple assessments and specialized care

Boylan Ward currently provides services for children and adolescents under a variety of legal orders.  Because Boylan is an open ward, closed facilities cannot be provided for children and adolescents who present a risk to themselves or others under the Mental Health Act.

Boylan Ward uses a three phase model of intervention

Boylan Ward has developed a series of Key Performance Indictors.

How to Access Our Service

Boylan Ward provides inpatient services for children and adolescents from metropolitan Adelaide and from rural and remote parts of South Australia.  Children and adolescents between 3 and 17 years who have complex problems requiring further assessment to determine diagnosis and treatment needs may be admitted.

Most services for children 12 years and under will comprise planned admissions for assessment purposes.  The timing of these admissions may need to be altered if at any time the mix of current inpatients is considered to be inappropriate for the admission of younger children.
