Northern CAMHS - Northern Region

CAMHS Northern Region provides a range of therapeutic counselling services for children and adolescents from  birth to 18  years of age and their families.

Northern CAMHS services include:

The team provides mental health services for children, young people and their families in the local government areas of

  • Salisbury
  • Playford (formerly Elizabeth and Munno Para)
  • Gawler

Clinical services are provided by

  • Psychiatrists
  • Community Mental Health Nurses
  • Clinical Psychologists
  • Social Workers
  • Speech Pathologists

The Northern Region collaborates with other services to help meet the needs of its community.  Examples include:

  • The ongoing provision of a Reflective Narrative Family Therapy team, involving community CAMHS and Child Protection Service (WCH) workers to provide a complimentary family focussed approach to mainstream counselling services
  • The involvement in an number of early intervention School retention projects ; including the Turn around project (TAP) and the Families empowered to Act Together (FEAT)
  • CAMHS Northern Region have had staff actively co running AMIGOS groups both with The Second Story and with Paralowie Youth Service
  • Collaborative work between CAMHS, the Northern Division of GP's, DETE, Relationships Australia and Shopfront has resulted in the development of very successful parent information evenings. More are planned for later in 2004
  • Joint Speech and Occupational therapy groups are run are run in conjunction with the Lyell McEwin health service
  • School Support services work in conjunction with programs such as Health Promoting Schools and Mind Matters, to provide a broad and comprehensive range of training workshops for teachers
  • CAMHS Northern Region staff have worked closely with Domestic Violence services to provide group programs for women and children how have been exposed to and traumatised by Domestic Violence
  • CAMHS Northern Region is part of a Regional Reconciliation Working Party
  • The Child and Adolescent mental Health Worker Employed through Gawler Health Service receives referrals and training and development opportunities through the CAMHS Northern Region Office

How to Access Our Service

Parents and guardians may telephone or visit the CAMHS service closest to them.  Adolescents over 16 years of age may contact CAMHS without parent or guardian consent or knowledge.  School Counsellors, General Practitioners and others may also contact CAMHS however contact from the parent/guardian or young person (if over 16 years of age) is usually required to formalise the referral.

The majority of the clinical services are provided at the Elizabeth office. Services are also offered in Salisbury and Gawler
