Process for Approval of University Student Initiated Research Projects

  1. Students considering undertaking a research project within the Division of Mental Health should firstly discuss this with their University supervisor to gain in principle support for the project from the University perspective.
  2. Students should then make contact with the relevant Chief Clinician of the respective discipline from the Division of Mental Health.
  3. If the Chief Clinician determines that the project may be feasible then the student should complete the  Expression of Interest Form  (Size 13 Kb)
  4. Students should then submit the "Expression of Interest" form to the relevant Chief Clinician.
  5. The Chief Clinician will then forward the Expression of Interest to the Professional Issues Group for consideration and clarifying of the implications for the organisation.
  6. Students may be required to present their proposal to senior clinical and management staff within the Division of Mental Health.
  7. If the proposal is supported in principle by the Division of Mental Health then a formal WCH Ethics Committee proposal needs to be completed.
  8. Once the Ethics Committee Proposal is completed by the student it needs to be forwarded to the Chief of Mental Health, WCH for signature before it is forwarded to the WCH Ethics Committee for consideration.
  9. If WCH Ethics Committee approval is obtained the student should then liaise with the relevant Chief Clinician or other designated contact person within the Division in order to progress commencing the Research Project.
