Division of Mental Health- Philosophy regarding University Student Research

The Division of Mental Health (DMH) contributes to the education of under and post-graduate students within relevant courses, by considering requests from students to conduct research projects.

While DMH carefully considers proposals from students regarding research, students should not assume that research requests will automatically be approved. Students also need to be aware that approval is required from both the DMH and the WCH Research and Ethics Committee prior to projects commencing.

All potential research needs to have regard to the rights of consumers of the Divisional services to privacy, respect and confidentiality. These rights encompass the right to refuse the presence of other people during the receipt of health care services, including researchers and students.

Students with research requests need to be aware of and adhere to the Division's Policies in relation to Client Rights (Division of Mental Health Policy 1/001/02 - Consumer Rights and Responsibilities) and Ethics

Each DMH Chief Clinician liaises with the Universities and Educational bodies in an ongoing manner regarding students and their educational requirements.

It is anticipated that students will report back their findings to relevant DMH staff at the completion of their research project.
