Social Work

Social Work - Paediatric Allied Health

WCH Social Workers helps improve the quality of life for children and young people and their family by:

  • helping to resolve issues and concerns through counselling and advice. This is in relation to the social, emotional, behavioural and practical implications of a child's diagnosis. This normally starts at the time the diagnosis is made.
  • educating families about the impact a disease/illness/condition will have on various aspect of their child's or the family's life.
  • providing information about community agencies and resources.
  • helping with hospital admissions and treatment requirements or decision making options.
  • speaking on behalf of patients, or the family, when necessary, within the hospital system.

How to access the service

Any patient may contact Social Work by telephone or in person.

Referrals for social work assistance can also be made by any member of the hospital treating team and by community agencies. It is preferable that referrals to a WCH Social Worker are made with the patient's knowledge and agreement. People should feel free to speak to a social worker for advice on the best way of referring.

Social Workers attend Outpatient Clinics and are available for consultation.

Individual social workers make their own arrangements regarding availability out of hours.

An after hours service for crisis situations is available by contacting the Hospital Coordinator via the switchboard ph (08) 8161 7000.
