Supporting Rural Health Care Providers to bring Children with Cancer Safely Home.NAME: Sandy Cleghorn POSITION: Project Manager, Supporting Rural Health Care Providers to bring Children with Cancer Safely Home. CONTACT DETAILS:
SUMMARY OF ROLE: The Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide is the treatment centre for all children diagnosed with cancer in South Australia and the Northern Territory. For children living in regional areas, this means lengthy periods of time away from their homes and community. Many families are separated as one parent relocates to Adelaide with their child, some deciding to sell homes and businesses and relocate altogether. Regional clinicians may have little or no experience in treating children with cancer and so supportive care poses a significant challenge for them when children are ready to return home. Our aim is to use Information Technology and innovative media to develop a framework to improve communication and better support, teach and mentor our regional healthcare providers. Sandy Cleghorn is the project manager working with clinicians from the WCH and experts from Digital Media to develop the e-learning modules and website. The project steering group includes regional nursing, medical and consumer representatives. The project is funded through a grant from the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing as part of their, Strengthening Cancer Care initiative. The pilot is due for completion in March, 2008. Clinical Trial ResearchNAMES: Barbara Chamberlain and Nina Green POSITION: Data Manager's Clinical Trials CONTACT DETAILS:
SUMMARY OF ROLE: The data office is the centre of research information in the Haematology and Oncology Department. We currently have 42 clinical trials open or temporarily closed to accrual and 13 studies closed but active to follow-up. Clinical trials which are being conducted in the data office are coordinated through the Children’s Oncology Group (COG); the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP), the Australian and New Zealand Children’s Haematology and Oncology Group (ANZCHOG) and the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH). The Oncology, Bleeding Disorders and Central Venous Access Devices databases are kept up to date and are presently being reviewed to improve the quality of data available. The future for us is to improve clinical trial recruitment, to do this we need to continue to educate all members of the Haematology and Oncology discipline and the wider community as whole to the benefits and the availability of studies. At the same time there is also the need to open more studies as they become available, so we can offer trial enrolment to all patients in our care and to the wider community of South Australia.
