Clinical Haematology and Oncology

The Department of Clinical Haematology/Oncology encompasses both the inpatient service provided in Brookman Ward , the outpatient service located in McGuinness McDermott Foundation Children's Clinic and the Haematology Laboratory Services

This department cares for children from South Australia, Broken Hill, the Northern Territory and Western areas of Victoria who require investigation and treatment of haematological disorders (thalassaemia, haemophilia and other bleeding disorders, thrombosis, anaemia and neutropenia), cancer including brain tumours and diseases requiring bone marrow transplantation.

Our clinical services include:

  • An outpatient treatment centre for ongoing management, supportive care and day treatment
  • Dedicated inpatient ward for acute care
  • Psychological and support services
  • Palliative care and bereavement support
  • Education for parents/families and health professionals
  • Clinical research and clinical trials
  • Community support links including school visiting program
  • Autologous and sibling allogeneic bone marrow transplantation
  • Therapeutic apheresis service
  • Paediatric, adolescent and women's consultative service

Specialist Clinics include:

  • Oncology
  • Paediatric and adolescent leukaemia and lymphoma
  • Long term survivorship
  • Thalassaemia and other transfusion dependent patient management
  • South Australian Haemophilia Treatment Centre
  • Bleeding disorders

The service is provided by a multi-disciplinary team which includes doctors, nurses, pharmacist, social workers, dietitian, school teacher, psychologist, music therapist, chaplains, play coordinator, ward clerk, clinic coordinator and data managers.

The team aims to provide children and families with quality care from both a physical and psychological perspective. Our aim is to provide the best available treatment options, excellent supportive care during treatment and education to assist families cope with the illness and follow up when treatment finishes. The multi-disciplinary team works in partnership with the families to ensure the needs of the child/adolescent receiving care is met.

How to access the service

The Department provides a service for children under 18 years of age. Referrals need to be made to the Clinical Haematology/Oncology Department. This generally requires a doctor's letter.

Appointments can be made by contacting the McGuiness McDermott Foundation Children's Haematology/Oncology Clinic Coordinator on (08) 8161 7411.

Urgent referrals can be made by contacting the Haematologist or Oncologist on call through the hospital switchboard (08) 8161 7000.
