are cared for in Newland Ward. Information for FamiliesParents and caregiversWe welcome the involvement of parents and caregivers while children are in hospital. If your child is to have an operation or test which needs a general anaesthetic, please do not leave the ward until you have seen two doctors (an anaesthetist and a surgeon). Both doctors will explain the procedure and ask you to sign a consent form. Newland Ward has a parents' room with tea and coffee, a microwave, shower and toilet facilities. For parents living in, breakfast is provided if required. We strongly recommend that you remain in the ward/parents' room until your child returns from Recovery. This is very important if the doctor needs to contact you. For safety reasons do not bring hot drinks/food into the ward. One parent/caregiver is welcome to stay in the ward overnight. Fold out sofa beds/recliner chairs and linen are provided. Accommodation is available within the hospital grounds at a nominal charge. Nearby hotel or motel accommodation is also available. There is a laundry in the ward. Washing powder is provided. The Hospital does not take responsibility for theft or loss of valuables. Please do not leave your valuables unattended. Caring for your childBeds and rooms are allocated on the basis of medical need. The medical teams usually visit children early in the morning and throughout the day as required. Bedtime is usually around 8.30 pm. Main lights are turned off at this time and night lights turned on. Services and facilitiesThe Hospital provides nutritious meals for children. Meals for parents and caregivers are available from the cafe. Our play coordinator will help your child to relax and have fun during their stay. The ward playroom has a range of games, toys and activities. Mobile phones interfere with sensitive medical equipment. Please observe signs. Pay phones are located in the parents' room and on every floor outside the wards. Incoming calls will be transferred to the bedroom phone. Televisions are provided in patient areas for all children. There are four television, four video and four Foxtel channels. Videos are played in negotiation with the nursing staff or play coordinator. Car parking is available on or near the hospital grounds. Visiting hoursParents and carers are welcome at all times. Other visitors are welcome between 10am and 8pm. Please remind visitors that your child may need to rest. You may wish to make arrangements for other siblings to be cared for while you are visiting particularly if your child is very tired. Siblings may be cared for in the WCH creche. Visitors, including family members with any infectious illness, upset stomach, skin infection or cold must not visit Newland Ward. Infections can easily be passed on.
