Paediatric Major Trauma Service

The WCH provides the Paediatric Major Trauma Service for South Australia and provides care for children with severe trauma for SA as well as for the Northern Territory, western Victoria and south-west New South Wales.

The service includes resuscitation and retrieval coordinated by the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) a full range of paediatric surgical subspecialties, anaesthesia, organ imaging and rehabilitation. In the Emergency Department a multidisciplinary trauma team receives patients with severe trauma.

Advice and consultation is provided to the ambulance service via radio link in ICU and to hospitals and doctors via a direct dial "hot line" in ICU ph (08) 8161 7999.

Paediatric trauma education for medical, nursing and allied health professionals is provided at the hospital and via outreach programs in rural areas. Contact Tony Slater or Sue Imgraben for details.

The Trauma Service undertakes regular case review to evaluate and improve the system of paediatric trauma management in the State. Referring doctors are encouraged to participate in this process by making constructive comment when appropriate.
