Paediatric Day Surgery Unit

Children admitted to the hospital who require an anaesthetic or are having simple surgical procedures are cared for in the Day Surgery Unit. They are admitted to the hospital through the Day of Surgery Admissions Unit (DOSA)

The Day Surgery unit is a 20 bed unit which can accommodate up to 40 patients per day split over morning and afternoon theatre sessions. Patients generally stay between 1-2 hours after their procedure.

Information for Families

Day Surgery has a parent’s lounge. It is recommended that you wait in the lounge for your child to return from their anaesthetic, you will be notified by the hospital staff when this occurs. Tea & coffee making facilities are available.

If however you choose to attend the café before your child’s return, please let the staff in Day Surgery know where you will be and it is advised that you turn on your mobile phone once outside the clinical areas (i.e. in the corridors or café) so that you may be contacted. It is very important that the doctor or nursing staff are able to contact you if need be during this time. Leaving the hospital at this time is strongly discouraged.

We require a parent to be present at all times whilst their child is admitted to the unit. The minimum length of stay in the unit depends on the procedure and anaesthetic used, but is generally 1-2 hours. We also recommend a second adult is present at discharge to assist you with caring for your child during transport home.

You will be given detailed instructions on how to care for your child after their procedure as well as any follow up appointments if necessary. A member of nursing staff will telephone you at home the day following your procedure to provide further support and information should you require it.

The Day Surgery Unit is open from 8.30 am – 6.30 pm Monday to Friday.
