Stomal Therapy

The Stomal Therapy service provides quality care to children with a range of needs such as:

• Stoma care
• Urology care
• Wound care

Education, counselling and referral to appropriate community and/or hospital based health professionals can be provided.

The service acts as a clinical resource to many nursing and affiliated health professionals in South Australia, and has strong links with stomal therapy nurses around Australia.

How to access the service

Any child/family can contact the Stomal Therapy service for care or advice about stomas, urology care or wounds.

A medical referral is not usually required.

An appointment can be arranged by contacting the Stomal Therapy Office phone (08) 8161 6671. If the need is urgent page the Nurse via the WCH switchboard phone (08) 8161 7000.

Information for families

Support is available for children with a variety of conditions including:

• Spina Bifida
• Anorectal anomalies – imperforate anus, Hirschsprung’s disease
• Inflammatory bowel disease
• Tumours
• Neurogenic bowel/bladder
• Abdominal trauma
• Pressure ulcers

These conditions may be present at birth, or develop later in life.

The Stomal Therapy nurses work in close consultation with surgeons, medical practitioners, and many other health professionals to enhance the care provided to the child and their family.

Other services include:

• Linking families with support groups
• How to access equipment eg catheters, wound care supplies
• Support and education about tests/examinations eg Urodynamic Bladder Function tests
• Updates to products eg stomal appliances, continence pads.

Our nurses are members of the Australian Association of Stomal Therapy Nurses and promote evidence based practice.

Hours

Service Hours are Mon - Friday 8am - 3pm.

For emergency care the WCH Paediatric Emergency Department is available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
