Breastfeeding Unit
How to Access the ServiceThe service is for women with newborn babies up to 6 weeks of age; older babies are referred to community services such as Child and Family Health. The unit is located within the Postnatal Ward and is open Monday to Friday 9.00am to 4.00pm by appointment only. No referral is needed. Anyone with breast feeding concerns may attend. Babies born at hospitals other than the WCH are also welcome to use the service. Appointments are made by phoning the Postnatal Ward (08) 81617958. Women are admitted to the unit as a day patient. When you come to the WCH, please go to the admissions desk on the ground floor of the Queen Victoria Building to register (map). Telephone advice is available at all times. There is no availability for drop-in advice. All consultations are strictly by appointment. Information for FamiliesThere is limited space within the unit, but where possible women may bring one support person if they choose. Most public hospitals offer similar services. These services are available in the Southern, Northern and rural regions. There is also community based support for women with breastfeeding concerns. These include Breastfeeding Association of Australia and Child & Youth Health. HoursThe service is open weekdays by appointment only, except public holidays. Contact Details
