Breastfeeding Unit

The hospital is committed to supporting women wishing to breast feed their newborn baby. We offer ongoing support after discharge in our Breast Feeding Unit.

The Unit is staffed by midwives, who are either lactation consultants or have extensive experience working with breast feeding women.

How to access the service

The service is for women with newborn babies; older children are referred to community services such as Child and Youth Health.

The unit is located within the Postnatal Ward and is open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm. No referral is needed. Anyone with breast feeding concerns may attend.  You do not have to have had your baby at the WCH.

Appointments are made by phoning the Postnatal Ward (08) 81617958.

Women are admitted to the unit as a day patient.  When you come to the WCH, please go to the admissions desk on the ground floor of the Queen Victoria Building to register (map).

Telephone advice is available at all times.

There is limited availability for drop-in advice, this is available for breastfeeding women who have a child in the paediatric wards.

Information for Families

There is limited space within the unit, but where possible women may bring one support person if they choose.

Most public hospitals offer similar services. These services are available in the Southern, Northern and rural regions.

There is also community based support for women with breastfeeding concerns. These include Breastfeeding Association of Australia and Child & Youth Health.

Hours

The service is open weekdays, except public holidays.
