Neonatology

Neonatology

The Department of Neonatology cares for babies born at WCH and babies transferred/retrieved from other hospitals. In conjunction with the Obstetric Service it forms part of the Perinatal Service for high risk pregnancies in South Australia. In addition to providing neonatal emergency transport the service provides consultation for peripheral clinicians.

The Department works closely with other WCH paediatric subspecialties and allied health departments. Care is provided by a team of neonatologists, registrars, neonatal nurse practitioners, extended practice nurses and midwives.

Nursery renovations have been completed and provide additional room for parents and their babies.

How to access the service

Babies born at WCH are cared in different clinical areas depending on their needs.

Babies can be referred or transferred by general practitioners, paediatricians, domicilliary midwives or CAYHS midwives after discussion with neonatologist.

Follow up appointments are mostly arranged prior to discharge from hospital but can also be made by calling the neonatal outpatient clinic. Access for request of retrieval/consultations can be obtained by calling (08) 81617868.

Information For Families

Babies can be brought to the Women's Assessment Service for common neonatal problems eg feeding, jaundice.

Please bring your baby's Child and Youth Heath record (blue book) whenever you visit the WCH.

Your baby might be weighed before the doctor examines your baby.
