The Women's and Children's Hospital is located on the traditional lands for the Kaurna people, and we respect their spiritual relationship with their Country. We also acknowledge that the Kaurna people are the custodians of the Adelaide region, and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Kaurna people today.

27 May saw the launch of our dual naming project, with signage around the Women’s and Children’s Health Network (WCHN) updated to include a Kaurna interpretation and translation.

This is the largest project of its kind for an SA Health Local Health Network to include an Aboriginal translation on all its signage. This aims to create a culturally inviting, safe, warm, friendly and welcoming environment for Aboriginal families accessing our services whilst educating and raising awareness of Aboriginal culture, language and history amongst our community.

The Kaurna language interpretation and translation acknowledges the strong connection to country and pays respect to the traditional owners of the land on which our hospital stands. Many of the translations provide a unique perspective on the services we provide.

Our Cultural Identity Artwork is featured on the Kaurna signs and using the WCHN Culture app (for iPhone) will allow you to hear an audio file and pronunciation guide for the translations. Having language spoken over country is a powerful way of acknowledging the connection Aboriginal people continue to have with this land.
