9 Tips For Self Care and Mental Health In Kids
Just like adults benefit from self-care, children of all ages do as well. Parents and carers can help children and young people to become aware of their own mental health and guide them to discover effective self-care activities.
Learning these skills is an important step towards independence and will give them strong foundations to cope with stress in the future.
These 9 tips from our Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) can help you start conversations with your child and start exploring ideas to keep their minds healthy – and yours too!
- – Share your own feelings with your child to encourage self-awareness
- – Encourage your child to focus on the moment
- – Find social groups that help them feel like they belong
- – Set aside time for low stress or solo activities
- – Focus on articulating feelings. Eg. “I am angry” or “I am sad”
- – Recognise toxic stress events
- – Cultivate interests and hobbies
- – Establish a self-care routine
- – Encourage journaling and diaries
