The Women's and Children's Hospital is located on the traditional lands for the Kaurna people, and we respect their spiritual relationship with their Country. We also acknowledge that the Kaurna people are the custodians of the Adelaide region, and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Kaurna people today.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website may contain images, voices and names of people who have passed away.

Mallee Ward (formerly known as Boylan Ward) is the only designated psychiatric inpatient facility for children and adolescents in South Australia, and provides specialised care and support for children and adolescents with severe mental health problems.

The service is for children and young people whose acute needs cannot be adequately met in a community setting. Common acute phase diagnoses treated by our services include, but are not limited to:

  • first episode psychosis
  • bipolar disorder
  • emerging personality disorder
  • severe depression or anxiety disorder

Aligned with the CAMHS Model of Care, there are three priority population groups that are particularly considered for inpatient care in line with their specific acute needs.

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
  • Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD)
  • Children and young people in child protection

Mallee Ward is also the Inpatient Unit of the Child Adolescent Mental Health Service. The images below show some of the key features of the ward – individual bedrooms with ensuites, access to fresh air in the outdoor courtyard and an open spaced unit filled with natural light.

How to access this service

Mallee Ward provides inpatient services for children and adolescents from metropolitan Adelaide and from rural and remote parts of South Australia and some rural sites such as, APY lands in Northern Territory, Broken Hill in NSW and Mildura in Victoria. Children and adolescents up to 18 years of age who have complex problems requiring further assessment to determine diagnosis and treatment needs may be admitted.

Services for children 12 years and under will comprise planned admissions for assessment purposes. The timing of these admissions may need to be altered if at any time the mix of current inpatients is considered to be inappropriate for the admission of younger children.
