The HENS department provides support for babies, children and young people throughout South Australia who require feeding through a tube.

About Us

HENS Nurse Consultants

The HENS team provides support to babies, children and young people who require feeding through a tube throughout South Australia.

We work closely with Dietitians, Speech Pathologists, and other health professionals.

HENS Nurse Consultants work an advisory role with your child’s primary medical or surgical team, as well as providing education, support, patient care, discharge planning, and specialised outpatient clinics.

HENS Nurses can be contacted via the phone to assist you with any issues that arise with your child's feeding tube, same day appointments can be made if required. HENS Team can refer you to additional support services e.g., ENCOMPASS, Local Community Health Providers.

The Home Enteral Nutrition Service Nurse (HENS) can be contacted Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:00pm. There is no HENS service on public holidays.

For urgent matters in hours: SMS the HENS phone and attend the hospital as soon as practicable.

For urgent matters after hours: contact the Paediatric Emergency Department, CAVUCS (WCH Virtual ED) or see your GP or arranged local support. If this occurs, please inform the HENS team so that we can follow up if required.
