Paediatric Forensic Medical Service

The Paediatric Forensic Medical Service (PFMS) is a new WCHN service formed by the specialist paediatricians previously working within Child Protection Services, and provides expert forensic medical services to children and young people (0-18 years).

Referrals for forensic medical assessments are accepted from Department for Child Protection (DCP) and the South Australia Police (SAPOL).

During an assessment, an expert forensic medical opinion is given to assist the police/DCP and courts/trier of facts in their deliberations regarding a child’s safety and/or whether a criminal offence has been committed.

Doctors and other clinicians employed within SA Health can consult with PFMS paediatricians for advice regarding suspicious injuries, concerns about possible sexual abuse, neglect or fabricated and induced illness.

PFMS operates from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday, with a 24 hour on-call service which includes PFMS paediatricians and CPS psychosocial clinicians.
