The Women's and Children's Hospital is located on the traditional lands for the Kaurna people, and we respect their spiritual relationship with their Country. We also acknowledge that the Kaurna people are the custodians of the Adelaide region, and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Kaurna people today.

Frequently asked questions

What happens once my child is referred to the Paediatric Sedation Service?

Your referral will be pass through an administration process and be directed to the staff of the Paediatric Sedation Service, who will review your referral. You will then be contacted by telephone for a patient consultation.

Following this consultation, a few things may occur. You and your child may be invited to visit the service for a face-to-face assessment or a familiarisation visit. You may also be offered an appointment for either nurse-led or anaesthetist-led sedation. Occasionally, the team will recommend other options instead of sedation.

What vaccinations does the Paediatric Sedation Service provide sedation for?

The service provides sedation for all scheduled vaccinations on the National Immunisation Program. Sedation for an influenza vaccine is only provided for individuals who are classified as medically at risk, all Aboriginal persons aged 6 months and older, and children between 6 months and less than 5 years. The Paediatric Sedation Service works closely with the Immunisation Clinic and the Specialist Immunisation Service at WCH who provide advice to the service.

Will my child need to fast before their admission?

Yes. It is important for the safety of your child that they have fasted before sedation is given. You will be advised of their fasting times in an email sent out prior to their admission. Generally, all sedation patients fast for six hours from solids (including milk feeds and thickener), with clear fluids permitted (water and cordial) until arrival to hospital.
