Children admitted to the hospital who are having simple surgical procedures either under anaesthesia or sedation are cared for in the Day Surgery Unit. They are admitted to the hospital usually via the Day of Surgery Admissions (DOSA) area. You will be provided with a post operative information sheet relevant to your child's surgery. Please keep this with you as you may need to refer to it once your child is at home.

The Day Surgery unit is a 20 bed unit which can accommodate up to 40 patients per day split over morning and afternoon theatre sessions. Patients generally stay between 1-4 hours after their procedure.

Further information

After you have taken your child to the theatre complex, please report back to your child's post operative ward immediately. This is so that the staff can show you where your child will be placed after their surgery and allow you to give your contact details if you wish to leave the ward area and take a break. Day Surgery has a parents' waiting room with tea and coffee facilities. Leaving the hospital grounds is strongly discouraged whilst your child is in theatre.

We require a parent to be present at all times whilst their child is admitted to the unit. The minimum length of stay in the unit depends on the procedure and anaesthetic used, but is generally 1-4 hours. We also recommend a second adult is present at discharge to assist you with caring for your child during transport home.

Please note: Families living over 100km away from the WCH must remain in local accommodation overnight. If arrangements have not been made, surgery may be postponed. Please notify the Elective Pre-Admissions Co-ordinator when calling 3-7 days prior to confirm surgery, on 8161 7666 .

You will be given a discharge information sheet by the nurse upon discharge from the Day Surgery Unit. It will provide post operative management including pain relief information and follow up appointment information.

All Day Surgery patients will receive a follow up telephone call from a nurse in the days following surgery. This is to enquire on your child’s post anaesthetic/surgery condition, post op recovery and any questions you may have regarding their care.

It is also an opportunity for you to provide us with any feedback regarding your child’s stay at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
