Medical Short Stay Ward
The ward cares for children aged from 12 months to 12 years with a variety of medical conditions including infectious illnesses represented by the following Medical Clinics: General Medicine; Dermatology; Neurology; Immunology; Rheumatology.

Medical Short Stay Ward provides care to patients generally between the ages of 6 months to 18 years with a predicted length of stay of 48 hours or less.
Patients receive care from a wide range of medical staff including Respiratory, General Medicine, Child Protection, Immunology, Renal, Rheumatology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Endocrine, Cardiology and Dermatology specialists.
How to access this service
Children are admitted to Medical Short Stay Ward through the Paediatric Emergency Department, Outpatient Clinics, inter-ward transfers and inter-hospital transfers. Patients can also be admitted directly to the ward for planned elective admissions.

Parents, Caregivers and Visiting Hours
Parents and caregivers are welcome to visit anytime. We ask all other visitors to visit between 10am and 8pm. One parent/caregiver is welcome to stay in the ward overnight. Fold out sofa beds/recliner chairs and linen are provided.
The Parent’s Room is available to all parents/carers as a place to relax, have a cup of tea or coffee and a bite to eat. Tea/coffee, milk, bread and some breakfast cereals and spreads are provided. The room also contains a microwave and fridge if you would like to bring in food from home.
Services and Facilities
The Hospital provides nutritious meals for children. If your child has food allergies or special dietary requirements please let your nurse know so this can be arranged. Meals for parents and caregivers are available from various food outlets within and near to the hospital.
The Women’s and Children’s Hospital supports breastfeeding. The ward has a breast pump available for your use.
The Hospital provides a range of infant formulas. As we cannot provide every formula that is available you may need to supply a sealed tin of your baby's preferred formula. Any unused formula will be returned to you on discharge.
Our play therapist will help your child to relax and have fun during their stay by providing a range of games, toys and activities. The ward also has a playroom where some toys are available.
Car parking is available on or near the hospital grounds.

Staff
There are many nurses who work on the ward. The nurses looking after your child will introduce themselves at the beginning of each shift.
A team of doctors will be caring for your child. Daily ward rounds begin from 9am. Your child may be seen at any time during the morning and may be reviewed again later in the day.
