PED Emergency Extended Care Unit
The PED Emergency Extended Care Unit is an 11-bed ward attached to the Paediatric Emergency Department. Children are admitted from Emergency for a short period of observation and treatment while waiting further consultation or a bed in another ward.
An 11-bed Emergency Extended Care Unit is attached to and run by the Paediatric Emergency Department. Children are admitted to the ward from Emergency for a short period of observation and treatment, while waiting for a specialty consultation, while awaiting a bed in a main ward or for an overnight stay.
Every child admitted overnight is seen by a consultant paediatrician who assesses the child's suitability for discharge.
The ward has two and one bed areas. These are allocated according to the medical condition of your child so, for example, a child with an infectious condition will be isolated in the one bed area. We are only able to accommodate one parent per child overnight due to space limitations. The area has a dedicated parent’s kitchen and associated amenities.
The ward is located on the ground floor of the Hospital, accessible from Kermode Street, Sir Edwin Smith Avenue and Brougham Place.
The team includes nurses, doctors, allied health workers, patient service attendants and clerical staff.
