Children's Anaesthesia

The Department of Paediatric Anaesthesia at the WCH provides elective and emergency anaesthesia for over 12,000 procedures per year, a 24 hour trauma service and an acute pain management service.

Welcome to the Department of Paediatric Anaesthesia at the Women's and Children's Hospital. We are the only tertiary paediatric anaesthesia department in South Australia providing elective and emergency anaesthesia for over 12,000 procedures per year, a 24 hour trauma service and an acute pain management service.

We have 23 Consultant Anaesthetists, 3 Senior Registrars, 5 Registrars and 2 Nurse Consultants who are dedicated to providing our patients with outstanding peri-operative care. We anaesthetise children for all paediatric surgery subspecialties excluding complex cardiac surgery. We are closely allied with our colleagues in the Department of Women's Anaesthesia.

Our department is committed to the teaching and training of all aspects of paediatric anaesthesia to fellow anaesthetists, other medical practitioners, nurses and paramedical professionals and is the centre of paediatric anaesthesia training for the South Australian Northern Territory Rotational Anaesthesia Training Scheme. We have a Senior Registrar Program offering both Australian and international anaesthesia registrars the opportunity to undertake a paediatric anaesthesia fellowship.

We are dedicated to contributing to excellence in anaesthesia research and are proudly associated with the University of Adelaide.

Further information

Most children who have surgery at WCH are admitted via Day of Surgery Admissions. Here they will meet one of our anaesthetists who will do a pre-anaesthetic assessment, formulate a safe anaesthetic plan for your child and give you and your child an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. Some children may need to see an anaesthetist prior to the day of surgery. If so, your surgeon will refer your child to our department and one of our anaesthetists will contact you prior to surgery.
