Women's and Babies' Division

The Women's and Babies' Division is a major provider of WCH page link iconobstetric, midwifery, WCH page link iconneonatal
and WCH page link icongynaecological services to South Australia, the Northern Territory and far western New South Wales and Victoria . The maternity and neonatal services include care delivery, health information and education as well as support and advice to women and their families during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal and neonatal period. These services are provided at a primary, secondary and tertiary level. The Division also provides gynaecological services at a primary, secondary and tertiary level.

Approximately 5000 babies are born at the Women's and Children's Hospital every year.

There are a number of WCH page link iconmodels of care offered by the Division providing a number of choices for women during their pregnancy, birth and postnatal period.

The Women's and Babies' Division as part of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital is a tertiary referral centre and is affiliated with the three South Australian Universities, the University of Adelaide, University of South Australia and Flinders University.

The obstetric service includes the WCH page link iconMaternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) service is a high quality multidisciplinary service which provides expert diagnosis and ongoing management for women whose pregnancy is significantly complicated by either maternal or fetal conditions. The Antenatal Diagnosis and Counselling Service (ADACS) works within the MFM service with a specific role in diagnosis and management of fetal conditions during pregnancy, including referrals to relevant specialists and to facilitate the ongoing care once the baby is born.

The Neonatal Service is the largest neonatal service in SA and incorporates a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a Special Care Baby Unit and the full range of neonatal services. The Neonatal Service works closely with a range of Paediatric Services relevant to the care for babies with specific needs.

The Gynaecological Service incorporates a general gynaecological service as well as gynaecological care associated with pregnancy, and the Family Advisory Unit service. The gynaecological service is well recognised for advanced endoscopic surgery.

The Women's Anaesthesia Services provides a comprehensive range of services to assist women with intrapartum analgesia, operative anaesthesia and pain management in general for both the Obstetric and Gynaecological Services.
